Interview „Wir sind STIMULATE“ mit Michael Bauer

Hallo Michael, vielen Dank, dass Sie sich Zeit für das Interview genommen haben. Sie sind Teil des Mammendorfer Institut für Physik und Medizin (MIPM). Zunächst würde ich gerne mehr über ihre Aufgaben und Ihren Werdegang erfahren.

Antwort: Ich habe mein Bachelorstudium in der Fachrichtung Bioprozessinformatik im Frühjahr 2020 bei MIPM abgeschlossen. Bei MIPM bin ich seit September 2019. Schon während und vor meinem Studium stand für mich fest, dass ich im Bereich der Medizintechnik tätig werden möchte, wodurch ich auch schon während meines Studiums in einer anderen Firma im Bereich der Medizintechnik tätig war. Mein Fokus innerhalb der MIPM GmbH liegt auf der Softwareentwicklung, hier vor allem auf der Projektbetreuung sowie auf der Softwaredokumentation und Zulassung. Zudem bin ich seit Anfang 2020 auch als Chief Digital Officer (CDO) tätig und digitalisiere das Unternehmen.

Wie gelingt es Ihnen, diese verschiedenen Aufgaben effektiv zu koordinieren, vor allem angesichts der Tatsache, dass sie parallel noch einen Masterstudiengang absolvieren?

Antwort: Die Masterarbeit habe ich zwischenzeitlich schon eingereicht, insofern habe ich inzwischen einen Stressfaktor weniger. Ich denke, der Schlüsselpunkt für ein erfolgreiches Arbeiten ist, dass man ein Ziel bzw. eine Motivation vor Augen hat, dann hat man auch mehr Spaß dabei. Fokussierung auf das Wesentliche und das Ausblenden von Details ist ebenfalls wichtig. Die Aufteilung der Aufgaben zwischen technischen Expert:innen und Projektleiter:innen ermöglicht effektive und effiziente Arbeit. Als Projektleiter bei MIPM habe ich gelernt, mich auf die Gesamtsicht des Projekts zu konzentrieren und mich nicht in Details zu verlieren.

Inwieweit stehen Sie in Verbindung mit dem Forschungscampus STIMULATE und wie kam der Kontakt zustande?

Antwort: Den ersten Kontakt zum Forschungscampus hatte ich bereits während meiner Bachelorarbeit. Hier habe ich eine Software zum Auswerten und Anzeigen von EKG-Rohdaten geplant und entwickelt. Diese Software kam auch beim aktuell laufenden EMERGE-Projekt zum Einsatz, sodass ich dadurch auch einen guten Einstieg in das Thema EKG innerhalb des MRTs gefunden habe und in diesem Bereich bis heute tätig bin. Beim EMERGE-Projekt geht es im Wesentlichen darum, ein 12-Kanal-EKG für MR-geführte Herzkatheter-Eingriffe und für hämodynamisches Monitoring zu entwickeln und damit verbundene Effekte zu erforschen. Vor diesem Projekt gab es auch schon ein anderes Projekt am Forschungscampus, bei dem MIPM beteiligt war. Hierbei ging es auch um eine EKG-Neuentwicklung.

Seit Mai 2023 haben Sie gemeinsam mit Ihren Kolleg:innen eine Zweigstelle am STIMULATE-Campus gegründet – was war die Motivation dahinter?

Antwort: Wir haben durch die bisherigen Projekte schnell gemerkt, dass der STIMULATE-Campus immense Möglichkeiten bietet. Damit meine ich sowohl technische als auch personelle Möglichkeiten. Personell insofern, dass hier viele schlaue Köpfe und motivierte Menschen aufeinandertreffen. Das bietet uns die Möglichkeit, Projekte effizient voranzutreiben und neues Wissen oder auch andere Ansichten zu gewinnen. Zudem bietet der Standort Magdeburg natürlich einen großen Pool an Studierenden im Bereich der Medizintechnik. Dieser Faktor ist in Zeiten des Fachkräftemangels essenziell für die Gründung einer Zweigstelle. Neben den personellen Faktoren bietet der STIMULATE-Campus auch technisch sehr viele Möglichkeiten, die für uns interessant sind, so macht es immens viel Spaß, hier zu arbeiten.

Und was erhoffen Sie sich in der Zukunft von der Zusammenarbeit?

Antwort: Zukünftig ist geplant, dass in unserem Büro am STIMULATE-Campus vor allem Forschung und Entwicklung stattfindet. Gerade in der Nische, in der sich MIPM befindet, ist Innovation einer der entscheidendsten Faktoren. Langfristig ist also geplant, dass in Magdeburg viele Entwickler:innen für und mit uns zusammen arbeiten. Damit dies auch gelingt und die neuen Mitarbeitenden gut in unserer MIPM-Family ankommen, holen wir sie zuvor für einige Wochen oder Monate nach Mammendorf. So können sie gut in unser Team und in die Prozesse integriert werden.

Ihre Arbeit beinhaltet die Betreuung von Studierenden. Welche Vorteile sehen Sie darin, junge engagierte Talente am STIMULATE-Campus auszubilden und wie trägt dies zur Umsetzung Ihrer Projekte bei?

Antwort: Einer der größten Vorteile ist schon in der Fragestellung enthalten, denn die Leute sind in der Regel hoch motiviert, ihr gelerntes Wissen auch in der Praxis umzusetzen. So entstehen häufig gute Produkte und Ideen. Bezogen auf die erfolgreiche Umsetzung von Projekten ist gerade die Motivation und eine Vision einer der entschiedensten Faktoren, was mit jungen Menschen super funktioniert. Im Bereich unserer Forschung und Entwicklung sehe ich es auch als großen Vorteil, dass auch einfach mal gebastelt werden darf und nicht immer alles einem strikten Plan folgen muss, denn das trägt natürlich noch zusätzlich zur Motivation und zur kreativen Entfaltung bei. Für mich persönlich ist einer der schönsten Aspekte bei der Zusammenarbeit mit motivierten Teammitgliedern, dass ich neue Dinge und neue Ansichten kennenlernen darf, so wird es nie langweilig und man entwickelt sich selbst immer weiter.

Hello Michael, thank you very much for taking the time for this interview. You are part of the Mammendorf Institute of Physics and Medicine (MIPM). Firstly, I would like to find out more about your tasks and your career.

Reply: I completed my Bachelor's degree in Bioprocess Informatics at MIPM in spring 2020. I've been at MIPM since September 2019, and it was already clear to me during and before my studies that I wanted to work in the field of medical technology, which is why I was already working in another company in the field of medical technology during my studies. My focus within MIPM GmbH is on software development, especially project support, software documentation and approval. I have also been Chief Digital Officer (CDO) since the beginning of 2020 and am digitising the company.

How do you manage to coordinate these different tasks effectively, especially in view of the fact that you are also completing a Master's programme at the same time?

Reply: I've already submitted my Master's thesis in the meantime, so I now have one less stress factor. I think the key to successful work is to have a goal or motivation in mind, then you'll have more fun doing it. Focussing on the essentials and ignoring details is also important. The division of tasks between technical experts and project managers enables effective and efficient work. As a project manager at MIPM, I have learnt to focus on the big picture of the project and not get lost in the details.

To what extent are you connected with the Research Campus STIMULATE and how did the contact come about?

Reply: I had my first contact with the research campus during my bachelor's thesis. I planned and developed software for analysing and displaying raw ECG data. This software was also used in the current EMERGE project, which gave me a good introduction to the topic of ECG within MRI and I am still working in this area today. The EMERGE project is essentially about developing a 12-lead ECG for MR-guided cardiac catheterisation and haemodynamic monitoring and researching the associated effects. Before this project, there was already another project at the research campus in which MIPM was involved. This also involved the development of a new ECG.

Since May 2023, you and your colleagues have founded a branch office at the STIMULATE campus - what was the motivation behind this?

Reply: We quickly realised from previous projects that the STIMULATE campus offers immense opportunities. By this I mean both technical and personnel opportunities. In terms of personnel, in that many clever minds and motivated people come together here. This gives us the opportunity to drive projects forward efficiently and to gain new knowledge or different perspectives. In addition, Magdeburg naturally offers a large pool of students in the field of medical technology. In times of a shortage of skilled labour, this factor is essential for the establishment of a branch office. In addition to the human resources factors, the STIMULATE campus also offers a lot of technical possibilities that are interesting for us, so it's a lot of fun to work here.

And what do you hope to gain from the collaboration in the future?

Reply: In future, it is planned that our office at the STIMULATE campus will primarily be used for research and development. Innovation is one of the most decisive factors, especially in the niche in which MIPM operates. The long-term plan is therefore for many developers to work for and with us in Magdeburg. To ensure that this is successful and that the new employees are well integrated into our MIPM family, we bring them to Mammendorf for a few weeks or months beforehand. This allows them to integrate well into our team and processes.

Your work involves mentoring students. What advantages do you see in training young, committed talent at the STIMULATE campus and how does this contribute to the realisation of your projects?

Reply: One of the biggest advantages is already contained in the question, because people are usually highly motivated to put the knowledge they have learnt into practice. This often results in good products and ideas. When it comes to the successful realisation of projects, motivation and a vision is one of the most decisive factors, which works really well with young people. In the area of our research and development, I also see it as a great advantage that people are allowed to tinker around and that not everything always has to follow a strict plan, as this naturally also contributes to motivation and creative development. For me personally, one of the best aspects of working with motivated team members is that I get to discover new things and new perspectives, so it never gets boring and you're always developing yourself further.
